Separate a lock fault from a closing problem
If the panel does not sit squarely, the latch may miss a sound keeper. If the handle is loose or the latch fails to move, the hardware may be the problem. Note whether locking fails only when the door is closed, without forcing the handle or testing it repeatedly.
Identify compatible hardware
Photograph the inside and outside handles, the door edge and the keeper on the frame. Handle hole spacing, latch shape and mounting depth vary. A replacement handle must work with the existing mechanism; a matching appearance alone is not enough.
